More About Jack Dylan

Jack Dylan is a fictional character and was created by Dixon Kinqade in a series of short stories first published in January 2009. Dylan first appeared in a short story called Crystal Blue Persuasion, published in a pulp styled paperback titled Black Book Detective Tales Volume # 01. BBDT is a series of books intended to be reminiscent of classic pulp publications, such as Black Book Detective Magazine and Dime Detective Magazine.

The character of Jack Dylan is foremost within the genre of hardboiled crime fiction that originated in the 1920's, most notably with Black Mask Magazine, in which Dashiell Hammett's Sam Spade and later Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe appeared.

Biographical Notes

Jack Dylan was born in Chicago, Illinois and now resides in an entirely fictional city in California. It's a hybrid of New Orleans, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. This city is home to the seedy and dangerous Water Front District with its accompaniment of ocean-side sounds and frequently eerie fog effects. The Palisades Bluffs is a residential area built on high cliffs overlooking the sea. The Palisades Hills is an upscale residential area which is home to the cities high society. Last but not least, there's the mystic Chinatown, home to the city's traditional Asian community. Dylan has always been fascinated by that section of town and has cultivated many friends in the area.

Dylan's office is located on the first floor of a small building at 1275 Baker Street. He lives in an apartment located above his office. The office telephone number is Alexander 2222. His office is small and modest, but clean and orderly. His secretary and business partner is the definitely dynamite Ms. Casey Dixon. Lieutenant Wallace, a detective with the city's homicide department, is a friend and source of information for Dylan within the community of law enforcement.

According to Dylan and generally speaking, divorce cases are his bread and butter. Although he's willing to take just about any case, if the client can pay a fee of thirty five dollars a day plus expenses.

Dylan is six feet two inches tall and weighs about 190 pounds. He has black hair and blue eyes. He's broad shouldered and narrow at the hip. Depending on the year, Dylan is about 30 years old.

Underneath the wisecracking, tough private eye, Dylan is quietly contemplative. He enjoys chess and philosophy. He's not afraid to risk physical harm and doesn't hesitate to dish out violence, but rarely does so to merely settle scores. When he packs heat, he's probably caring a Walther PPK semi-automatic pistol.

He smokes like fiend and prefers Marlboro brand cigarettes. Truth be told, he'd much rather smoke a pipe, but that's not very convenient when he's out and about or on the job. He drinks alcohol socially, but rarely in large quantities. Although, he's adept at using liquor to loosen the tongues of people from whom he needs to extract information.

He loves good coffee and usually takes it with cream and sugar, but sometimes will forego the cream. Dylan is not a gourmet, but he clearly appreciates food and has a sophisticated, if perhaps idiosyncratic, palate. Generally, he doesn't care for seafood. Fried oysters, clams, crawfish, cod and scallops are the primary exceptions to the rule. Liver, ham, hot dogs, and bologna will never touch his lips.

Dylan is a boating enthusiast. He is seen on boats both for business and leisure. He loves the water, loves to swim and does so like fish.

Dylan is morally flexible, especially when it involves a dame in a short skirt. He'll sometimes take advantage of the genre's usual femmes fatals. He won't hesitate to seduce a duchess or a nun. If she has the right curves in the right places, she's fair game as far as he's concerned.

He's willing to have meaningless affairs or one night stands with virtually any woman that fits the bill, and discards them the minute they become inconvenient, but he rarely dates a woman for any significant period of time. In fact, he lives by the three month rule. "That's enough time to get to know someone and have a good time, but not so long that a woman gets too attached. Besides, if a man doesn't get what he's after in three whole months, then he's never gonna get it."

Generally, Dylan exhibits a dismissive attitude towards women and has little use or patience for them. Since the divorce, his sexual appetite has somewhat cooled. Although, he openly admits to having a predilection for married women. "I prefer being the other man. That keeps things simple and it's more fun. That way I get the best a woman has to offer and I don't have to put up with the rest of her."

'Nuff said!
